Scottish electronic artist and producer Fourth Daughter is back with yet another dancefloor-ready track, sharing a stunning new single, Higher (Just A Feeling). The release is accompanied by a gorgeous music video, directed by Elise Schatz and shot in downtown LA.
Out now via music is fun, the energetic and arresting track features the talented artist’s instantly recognisable blend of pulsating synths, luminous soundscapes and her own radiant vocals, resulting in a vibrant and summery sound that’s impossible to ignore. Coming fresh off the back of being selected for BBC Introducing’s Track of the Week for previous single, Look What You’ve Done, the captivating song feels like going to the club after bathing in the Balearic sun – despite being written and recorded during the depths of winter.
“It was written on the most freezing day at the beginning of December last year, which is kinda funny given how summery the song is,” explained Fourth Daughter, real name Emily Atkinson, who premiered the track during a standout set at Latitude Festival 2024. “I was in the studio for a full week with the same producer and we were a couple days in at this point. We had been writing darker songs so, on this day, I felt like writing the complete opposite to mix it up. The song was written from scratch in about six hours and felt like a total blur because we were just in the zone and on a total high writing it!”
We welcome Fourth Daughterin this edition of 5 Facts / 5 Tracks.
5 Facts:
My first proper job was in taking complaints for toilet roll and was the most ridiculous year of my life doing that for 5 days a week. I used the job to help fund a very expensive PR campaign at the time and it was the only thing to motivate me listening to complaints about that for so long.
I am actually the fourth daughter in my family. It’s true. But I do also have a brother so whilst I am the fourth daughter I’m also actually the fifth child.
I love horror movies so much but blood makes me feel so queasy. I once threw up in the cinema on the infamous blood scene in the movie “It” and I don’t think I can trust myself to watch horror movies in the cinema again.
I always wanted to be a singer. I can’t really remember dreaming of doing anything else. It started out at age 7 when I was desperate to play the piano so I started learning and then it evolved over time to singing as well. Then I learned to songwrite and then to produce and here I am today and although the desire has changed from singer to artist, it still feels the same.
I’d reached a point a few years ago when I felt like I was failing and that maybe a career in music wasn’t possible for me and then lockdown hit which amplified that even more. I bought a new synth to pass the time and pulled together 4 songs that I thought had legs to go and sent them to everyone I could think of that might like it and this was the catalyst to me then getting a record deal shortly after. So, if anyone reading this has ever felt the same just keep going.
5 Songs:
Higher (Just a Feeling) – Fourth Daughter
I’m so proud of this song. I wrote it last year in early December and it just came together so fast. I think the combination of the two main hook samples has worked so well and I just love the energy of it. I was buzzing the day I wrote it and I think that made its way into the song. It was written and produced in about 6 hours start to finish so I was so surprised at how much everyone around me loved it at the time because of how quickly it was written. I’m so made up to see people’s reactions to the song and the video. Filming the video in LA in March of this year was an absolute dream and something I’ll remember forever.

Jamie XX – Sleep Sound
I love this song so much and it was the first thing I’d ever heard of Jamie XX and I’m still such a big fan now. I’m kind of in awe of his production and I find it really inspiring. His album “In Colour”that “Sleep Sound”comes from is one of my favourite albums of all time and I can’t wait for his new album to be out in September.

Faithless – We Come One
When I was a kid my Dad would play Faithless a lot in the house and this is one I remember quite vividly.
Listening to so much dance and electronic music growing up has absolutely fed its way into the music I make and listen to now and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rufus Du Sol – On My Knees
I LOVE Rufus Du Sol. I’m definitely really influenced by them.
I love the analogue synths, beats and just cool interesting lyrics and melodies. Their music has a perfect balance of melancholy mixed with being kind of euphoric. I find myself going back to their live set filmed at Joshua Tree all the time and “On My Knees”always sticks out for me.
They’re incredible and I really aspire to them.

Flight Facilities – Two Bodies
“Two Bodies”was the first track I ever heard of Flight Facilities and is still easily my favourite of theirs. I never get bored of it and I think Emma Louise’s vocals just make it. So smooth and timeless.
